Fall Bible Study: Holy Spirit (session 10)

Posted by fpcmarietta in DefaultTag

This week, we tackle chapter 8 "Peter's Praise" of Fresh Air.

  1. In Acts 2, the followers of Jesus receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This gift manifests in their speaking in many different languages. Have you ever heard someone speak in tongues? What does “speaking in tongues” mean for you: in terms of your faith and your practice of Christianity?
  2. Levison observes that, rather than a confused babbling, the many languages of Acts 2 allows the story of what God has done to be heard clearly by all. Levison argues that “the purpose of ecstasy is to communicate a clear and comprehensible word that recounts God’s praiseworthy acts.” How does this perspective influence your views on speaking in tongues?

Fall Bible Study: Holy Spirit (session 9)

This week, we dive into chapter 7 "Jesus' Test."

  1. Read Mark 9:1-13. What is the lesson that Jesus learns from the Spirit? When has adversity in the midst of God’s will taught you a similar lesson?
  2. Levison writes, “The holy spirit sends us to places and people we would never otherwise choose to go to because only there, where our very existence is at risk, can we understand…that we too are God’s beloved.” (pp. 178-179) How is this observation at odds with the world’s definition of love?
